What Is LaTeX Typesetting?

LaTeX is a typesetting system built for content that ordinary layout tools can struggle with- mathematics, scientific notation, dense cross-referencing, and long structured documents. Unlike conventional page-layout workflows, LaTeX uses markup and document structure to define elements such as equations, sections, references, and numbering before composing them into the final page.

The practical consequence is consistency. Equations, numbering, and references remain connected through correction rounds and renumbering, reducing the risk of errors being introduced as the document changes. Its structured source also makes LaTeX well-suited to print and digital publishing workflows.

That is why LaTeX remains widely used in mathematics, physics, and computer science publishing.

It is used well beyond the sciences. Linguistics, economics, and formal logic rely on it for the same reason: notation has to be exact, and cross-referencing can run throughout the book.

What Usually Goes Wrong

Three problems account for most of the math-heavy titles that arrive here from another supplier.

Numbering drifts between revisions

Equations get added or removed during correction rounds, the numbering shifts, and in-text references quietly point at the wrong expression. The page reads perfectly and is wrong.

Numbering and cross-references are checked as a pair after every round, not once at first proof.

Equations become pictures

Mathematics converted to images during output loses all its structure. It cannot be searched, read aloud, or resized, and it has to be redone entirely when the title moves to a new platform.

Notation is carried through as MathML rather than rasterised, so the digital edition stays usable.

The wrong tool for the title

LaTeX is not always the answer. An illustrated academic book forced through it costs more and looks worse than the same title set conventionally.

Can you work from LaTeX source files?

Yes. Send a representative chapter with your class file and any packages the title relies on, and we will confirm the production route before quoting. Custom macro packages vary enormously between authors, so we look at the actual files rather than quoting blind.

Do you deliver MathML as well as LaTeX?

Yes. Equations are delivered as MathML for the digital edition, which keeps them searchable and readable by assistive technology rather than becoming pictures. The two notations sit alongside each other rather than replacing one another.

Can you produce JATS XML from LaTeX content?

Yes. JATS XML is delivered alongside the typeset files, with BITS XML where the content is a book rather than an article, and validated before delivery.

What happens to equation numbering across revisions?

Numbering and in-text cross-references are checked as a pair after every correction round rather than once at first proof. Numbering drift between revisions is the single most common error we see in maths-heavy titles arriving from elsewhere.

Do you set in LaTeX, or convert to something else?

It depends on the content. Titles where mathematics is the substance are usually best set in LaTeX. Illustrated and design-led academic books are often better in InDesign. We will tell you which we recommend for your title and why, before you commit.
